Ghost Towns, Mining Towns, & Local History

Southwestern New Mexico is a wonderland for history buffs. People have been inhabiting this area for at least 11-12,000 years, so there’s lots to see! New Mexico True calls the area of Southwestern New Mexico the State’s “Final Frontier,” and our location offers a wealth of amazing day trips to various sites of interest:

Mogollon Mining Ghost Town, near Glenwood. Two hours away.
Old Hatchita Mining Ghost Town, near Hatchita. Two and a half hours away.

Pinos Altos Historic Town. 30 minutes away (between Silver City and Sapillo Creek Escape on Route 15). Explore this small, still thriving mining town and have dinner or drinks at the circa 1860 historic Buckhorn Saloon and Opera House.

Silver City Celebrates its Wild West Past – did you know Billy the Kid grew up in Silver City? You can view a replica of his childhood home right in town.
